This institute was established by British in 1939 for 100 students. Program was conducted in English.1959 program was conducted in Sinhala and from this year it has been conducting again in English.

Through historical facts we can identify with close relationship between wars and fields of nursing. Although war did not affect organized nursing and nursing education in Sri Lanka. The beginning of world war іі closely associated it. This is because the first and with main nurses training school of Sri Lanka was establish in the same year in which world war іі. Ms. Biard, who was a nursing tutor training in England on with 6th may1939 under with objective in providing organize nursing education for nursing schedule. This school of nursing was in capable of accommodating 1000 nursing students. Mrs. .Brohier, a Sri Lanka become the 1st vice principal. There the medium of education was English and women who passed 7th grade were chosen first to attend. Later this education qualification was raised up to junior English pass and senior English pass. Students were enrolled after and interview, This training period was 3 years and 7 month, 2 year, 3 year examination were held and then appointed as nurses.

A team consisting of 5 male student nurses was enrolled to nurses training in school in 1948, Nursing education and training period for groups of student under numerous principals until present day.
