Overview

Diploma in Counseling & Psychotherapy was introduced considering the high demand in Sri Lanka for qualified and most importantly skilled counselors and psychotherapists. This program was specially designed by Dr. Janet LeValley, the academic dean of Colombo Institute of Research & Psychology. Experience she posses after working for decades in both western and Asian communities as a senior counselor and a psychologist largely assisted in selecting counseling and therapeutic techniques that would best fit south Asian cultures.

Dr.LeValley herself conducts lectures and training sessions for most of the modules of this program. Thus students enrolling for this program have the opportunity of being trained by a highly reputed and an experienced therapist. Apart from the modules designed to provide students with a better understanding of the theories, concepts and various techniques of counseling, they are also exposed to a range of different therapeutic methods such as art therapy, drama therapy, music therapy, play therapy and behavior modification methods.

A highlight of this diploma is it also includes training in hypnosis. The curriculum is designed in a way that it produces professional counselors who would carry out their practice maintaining high standards of ethics and professional conduct. This program will also honor cross-cultural traditions and will advocate such traditional participation in their dialogue. Students have the opportunity of obtaining internships at CIRP or its partner institutes to practice what they learn, under supervision of a senior psychologist.
