Sri Lankan President presses the need to teach different languages in schools

Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena emphasized the need to teach different languages in schools as a way to build ethnic accord among different communities.

“We should promote teaching different languages in schools, which is a principal requirement towards building harmony among communities,” the President said when he met with the officials from the National Education Commission on June 9 at the Presidential Secretariat.

The development of communication skills is a basic need to spread friendship between ethnic groups, he said.
President Sirisena emphasized the need to further develop the education policy to meet the national and international requirements.”We must further develop our education policy with a comprehensive understanding about national and international requirements,” the President told the officials.

“We should pay special attention to implement a strong programme to teach Tamil Language to Sinhala students as well as Sinhala Language to Tamil students,” he observed.”At the same time we must promote teaching of technological subjects,” the President added.

The officials apprised the President regarding their current progress of educational plan implementation and future plans.
