Higher National Diploma

Overview

Higher National Diploma in Psychology offered by CIRP is considered a qualification that is equal to the first two years of a bachelors degree in Psychology.

This is a program that provides a recognized, reputed qualification in psychology, mainly for the individuals who wish to pursue a career in psychology but are unable or not willing to enter a degree program at this moment due to financial or other constraints.

The HND program alone is a complete qualification and stands between a Diploma and a Bachelors degree as far as the academic recognition is concerned. The advantage graduates of HND would have over other diploma holders is that it could be used as an entry qualification to the final year of a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology in many universities. Thus this is largely popular among students who wish to transfer to UK for further studies after studying one or two years in Sri Lanka.

Upon successful completion of the HND program, students can transfer their credits into the third year of the degree program. Thus by studying for only 1 ½ years and spending less than 10% of the usual cost, HND students obtain knowledge, skills and a qualifications equal to two years of a university education.

University of Hertfordshire UK, has already signed a recognition agreement with CIRP to allow the transfer of HND students into the B.Sc. (Hons) Psychology program in their university. And many other universities from Europe, South East Asia, Australia & US have approached CIRP, and discussions are underway to come to such agreements. This will provide CIRP students options in selecting from a range of universities to top up their HND with a Degree if they wish to do so.

This 18 month program includes three levels, HND Level 1, HND Level 2 & HND Level 3. Each level includes 10 modules that should be completed within 6 months and a student must complete all 30 modules to graduate with this qualification. Out of the 30 modules 18 are compulsory and 12 are electives. Students usually select their electives based on the field of psychology they prefer to specialize in.

Elective modules

A Student should take 12 elective modules in total to complete the HND. They are expected to select 2 electives at HND level 1 and then 5 electives each at HND level 2 & 3. CIRP offers more than 30 electives in different fields in psychology such as Child psychology, Clinical psychology, cognitive psychology, organizational psychology, Social psychology, health psychology, counseling psychology and forensic psychology.
